PeachCare and GAPP do not connect
This one catches families out, and it is worth understanding before you enroll in anything.
The thing to know first
A child enrolled in PeachCare is not eligible for GAPP in-home nursing. PeachCare and GAPP run on separate tracks. If skilled nursing at home is the goal, the route is Medicaid, and for families over the income limit that usually means Katie Beckett, which ignores your income entirely.
What PeachCare is
PeachCare for Kids is Georgia's Children's Health Insurance Program, CHIP. It provides health coverage for children in families who earn too much for regular Medicaid but cannot easily afford private insurance. It is genuinely good coverage for doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions and check-ups.
What it is not is a Medicaid card. And GAPP is a Medicaid program.
Why families get caught
The sequence usually goes like this. A family applies for Medicaid, is denied on income, and is offered PeachCare instead. They accept, because coverage is coverage and nobody mentions GAPP. Months later a doctor recommends in-home nursing and they discover the door is closed on the coverage they already have.
Nobody did anything wrong. The two programs are administered separately and the PeachCare enrollment path has no reason to mention pediatric home nursing.
What to do instead
- Do not enroll yet, if nursing may be neededIf your child has medical needs that might require skilled care at home, pause before accepting PeachCare and get advice first.
- Ask about Katie Beckett by nameIt ignores parents' income and looks only at the child's medical needs. This is the pathway most families in this position need.
- Talk to your child's physicianAsk directly whether they would document a nursing-facility level of care at home. Their answer tells you whether Katie Beckett is realistic.
- Call us before you change anythingIf your child is already on PeachCare, do not drop it on your own. Talk it through first so there is no gap in coverage.
CareSource, Amerigroup and Peach State are a different thing
Families mix these up constantly, and the difference decides whether your child can get GAPP at all.
Those three are care management plans for regular Medicaid. If your child has one of them, your child has Medicaid, and Medicaid is what GAPP requires. Your child can get GAPP nursing.
There is one step. GAPP is paid on a fee-for-service basis rather than through a care plan, so a child in a care management organization has to be moved to fee-for-service Medicaid first. We submit the DMA-6A that requests it, by submitting the DMA‑6A. It can take up to 30 days to show on the eligibility screen, and program rules require us to explain it to you before we do it, which is what this paragraph is.
PeachCare is not one of those three. PeachCare is CHIP, not Medicaid. A child enrolled in PeachCare is not eligible for GAPP, and no amount of paperwork changes it. That is the distinction this whole page exists to draw.
