Atrium Health Navicent Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital on Pine Street is middle Georgia’s children’s hospital. Its neonatal unit runs 56 beds, 42 of them Level III intensive care and 14 Level II intermediate, alongside a 22-bed pediatric ICU. Most medically fragile babies in this part of the state come home from that building.

The most specialized surgical care can still mean a referral to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. From Macon that is roughly eighty-five miles each way, which is exactly why the day-to-day care belongs at home in Bibb rather than in a car on I-75.

Bibb County is served by District 5-2, the North Central Health District, administered from Macon itself. The district covers thirteen counties: Baldwin, Bibb, Crawford, Hancock, Houston, Jasper, Jones, Monroe, Peach, Putnam, Twiggs, Washington and Wilkinson.
